FOOTBALL 2000(tm)
-----------------
Thank you for downloading Football 2000. We think you'll have lots
of fun playing the game, watching the game play itself, or both!

If you have not yet run SETUP, or want to add sound to the game, see
the "Installation" section below.

PLAYING THE GAME:
-----------------
When first installed, the game is set to play against itself
automatically. When you've watched for a while and want to take
control, press the TAB key to activate the configuration screen,
then click "Automatic Play" to turn that option off.

While you're there, you can customize the colors, names, and
computer speed - even check out the playbook. You can come back to
this screen at any time during the game by pressing the ESC key.

Kickoff:
--------
When the game starts and the players take the field, the home team
(your team) is on the left and receives the first kickoff. When the
ball has been kicked, the receiving player turns gray.

When the player receives the ball, you will be able to see it next
to him. You can control the direction the player runs by moving the
mouse, or by using the arrow keys on the keyboard.

Offense:
--------
When the kickoff return is over, you can select an offensive play.
Press the SPACE BAR or click the right mouse button repeatedly until
you see the name of the play you want at the bottom of the screen.

Then press ENTER, or click the left mouse button, to lock in that
play and proceed. Your players will set themselves up at the line,
and in moment the play starts. You can optionally press ENTER or
click again to force a faster snap.

If you picked a simple running play (Fullback Trap or Fullback
Option), just avoid tackles and move the fullback forward to gain
yards.

If you picked any other play, you will have to first move the
quarterback away from the line to avoid a sack, then either pass the
ball to another player or run the quarterback. If the quarterback
crosses the line of scrimmage you will not be unable to pass.

To select a receiver during the play, press the SPACE BAR (or right
button) repeatedly until the receiver you want is flashing.

To pass the ball to the selected receiver, press ENTER (or the left
button). If you did not press the SPACE BAR before passing, the
ball is thrown to one of the default receivers for the play called -
but you won't know which player will get the ball until you throw!

In fourth-down situations, you can either go for it, punt, or kick a
field goal. Your computer opponent may occasionally go for it on
fourth down as well, so watch out!

At the higher difficulty levels, the computer team's ability to stop
your runners increases.

You can press T between plays to call a timeout and stop the clock.
You get only 3 per half, of course.

Defense:
--------
Defensive plays are even easier to master. First, use the SPACE BAR
(or right button) to select the defensive set you want to use.
Then, press ENTER (or click the left button) to lock in the play.

While the players are getting set, press the SPACE BAR (or right
button) repeatedly until the player you want to control is flashing.
You can do this at any time during the play.

At the higher difficulty levels, the other players on your defensive
team may slow a runner, but will have little chance of stopping the
run without your help. You need to get your guy in there and make
contact with the runner. You also need to be moving when you hit
the runner - if you just stand in his way he'll probably bump you
away and keep going.

During plays you will sometimes be able to see a player's arms and
legs, signifying that he has been knocked down. During the time he's
down he cannot stop any player or tackle the ball carrier. Players
knocked down will get back up after a short, random amount of time.
At higher difficulty levels, it is a bit more likely that your players
will be knocked down; at the lower ones, your players will easily control
the computer players.

Sometimes you will see the message "Brought down at the..." instead
of "Tackled at the...", indicating that the tackle was yours and not
one of your team mates.

You can sometimes deflect a field goal, which will reduce the
chances that the kick is good.

CONFIGURING THE GAME:
---------------------
You can get to the configuration screen by pressing the TAB hey
while the game is running, or by using the Setup (or Settings)
button of the screen saver.

You change many aspects of the game: the team names and colors; the
playing field's name and color; the screen saver password; minutes
in each quarter; the difficulty level; the speed at which the game
runs.

You can also select or de-select the Auto-Play function (plays
without your help) or Coach Mode (you call the plays while the
computer auto-plays), and you can turn off the sound if you've added
the sound files contained in FBSOUND.ZIP to the game.

Until the game is registered, you will also see a button you can
later use to enter registration codes.

INSTALLATION:
-------------
1) Create a directory on your hard drive (let's assume it to be
C:\FB2000) and move all the files from FB2000.ZIP into it.

2) Run the program SETUP.EXE (now found in C:\FB2000.ZIP). SETUP
will automatically:

	- create a new Football 2000 program group (or folder)
	- create icons for the game and for this README file
	- move the screen saver to the \WINDOWS directory

3) To add sound to the game, download FBSOUND.ZIP and add the files
in it to the other files.

NOTE: If you ever want to un-install, simply delete the icons, the
program group, and the new directory. No changes are made (or files
added) to the Windows system during installation.

FIRST VIRTUAL
=============
EZ Software has joined the ranks of over 2200 product and service
vendors now accepting payment via a secure Internet method provided
by First Virtual Bank.

You can become a "virtual" card-holder with First Virtual for only
two dollars per year. You will then be able to use your current
credit card (registered one time with First Virtual by dialing an
800 number) to purchase products and services on the Internet
without ever sending your credit card information over the Net.

Only your personal code, called a VirtualPIN (Personal ID Number),
is sent to a vendor an payment. The vendor submits the payment
request to First Virtual, who always e-mails you for verification
before charging your account.

Unlike intercepted credit card information, a intercepted VirtualPIN
CANNOT used to purchase anything you don't want! If a suspicious
charge comes to you for verification, you can respond "Fraud" to
have the VirtualPIN immediately cancelled.

You can register with First Virtual by visiting their web page at:

	http://www.fv.com/newacct/

(...or, request an e-mail application by sending any message to
apply@card.com...)

You simply fill out the application and choose a VirtualPIN. You DO
NOT send your credit card number in this application.

(Regarding the VirtualPIN: First Virtual may have to change it a
little if it's a duplicate. Both letters and numbers are allowed to
make it possible to choose a PIN that will be easy to remember.)

First Virtual, upon receiving your application, will quickly respond
with an e-mail that provides a registration number and an 800 number
to call. You then call this number and use a touch-tone phone to
supply the card number and expiration date.

First Virtual sends a final e-mail that contains your VirtualPIN and
confirms that your account is active. You're ready to buy securely
over the Net!

Please do not hesitate to contact us at...

...if you need our assistance.
